One-Time Delinquent Property Tax Relief Program Announced for Cincinnati Homeowners

Cincinnati, Ohio, August 18, 2025 — Approximately 250 eligible homeowners in Cincinnati may soon receive relief from nearly $800,000 in delinquent property taxes, thanks to a new initiative funded by the City and led by the Hamilton County Treasurer’s Office.

“Across the state, we’ve seen property values rise and taxes rise with them,” said Hamilton County Treasurer Jill Schiller. “And while there needs to be a holistic approach by the state legislature to address these issues, we are using the tools we have to help our most vulnerable.”

The program, supported by a $250,000 allocation from the City’s FY26-27 Operating Budget, aims to prevent foreclosure and offer a fresh start to vulnerable residents.

“This program is exactly what a strong intergovernmental partnership has the power to accomplish,” said Mayor Pureval. “In collaboration with the Treasurer, The Port, and WIN, we will be able to make a meaningful positive impact on some of our most vulnerable neighbors. I’m incredibly grateful that our partners remain invested in our shared vision.”

The Hamilton County Landbank will serve as the strategic implementation partner, coordinating with the Treasurer’s Office to purchase and retire tax liens before the 2025 tax bills are due in 2026.

“At The Port and Landbank, we use innovative tools to break down barriers that hold back both properties and the people who live in them,” said Laura Brunner. “One-time debt relief doesn’t just prevent foreclosure; it clears the way for families to access resources that help keep their homes stable for the future. I want to thank Treasurer Schiller and Mayor Aftab for their leadership in making this effort possible, and Sister Barb and Working in Neighborhoods for assisting families as they pursue this opportunity.”

Eligible homeowners will be automatically notified by mail and guided through a process managed by Working in Neighborhoods (WIN), which will provide free financial counseling and intake services.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must reside in the City of Cincinnati
  • Live in an owner-occupied single or two-family home
  • Home must have a market value of $100,000 or less
  • Owe $10,000 or less in delinquent property taxes as of July 2025

"When you receive a letter in the mail saying this program is available, it is true,” said Sister Barbara Busch. “If you receive one, please call WIN to establish a plan to support you. We are grateful to the Treasurer, the Mayor, and The Port for entrusting us with the opportunity to administer a program that will keep more people in their homes.”

WIN will also partner with other housing organizations to provide additional legal and financial services to participants.
