Demolition Begins on the Former Northgate Mall Sears Building
The Port is managing the demolition project.
WHAT: On behalf of Colerain Township, The Port of Greater Cincinnati Development Authority (The Port) selected a contractor to facilitate the demolition of the former Sears building at Northgate Mall, marking a significant step toward community revitalization.
In 2023, at the request of the Colerain Township Board of Trustees, the Hamilton County Land Reutilization Corporation (a managed entity of The Port) acquired the former Sears building with Township funding. Port staff secured additional resources from the Ohio Department of Development to abate environmental hazards and demolish the structure, paving the way for the redevelopment and revitalization of the Colerain Township community.
The Port selected Green City Demolition through a competitive bid process to carry out the project.
WHEN: Green City Demolition provided the following anticipated demolition schedule*. This timeline is an estimate and could be subject to change:
- Week of 5/12: Interior cleanout and abatement will start.
- Mid-June: Building separation from the mall will start.
- July 21: Start of structural demolition.
- October & November: Facade restoration on the mall.
- December 1: Project completion.
WHERE: 9505 Colerain Ave, Cincinnati, OH 45251
WHY: Colerain Township made a strategic decision to invest in the purchase of the Sears building at Northgate Mall, realizing an opportunity for the Township to play a significant role in the redevelopment of the site. The Township sought out The Port for technical expertise in acquisitions and demolitions, establishing a partnership to advance the project. While The Port carries out the demolition, Colerain Township is working collaboratively with community stakeholders to create a new vision for this critical corner of Colerain Avenue. While both entities are engaged in the demolition project, The Port is not involved in its future use.
