UC Real Estate Series: Financing Tools

UC Real Estate Center offered a Professional Development program on Financing Tools on March 24, presented by Susan Thomas, Vice President of Public Finance, Port of Greater Cincinnati Development Authority and Matt Staarmann, Managing Director, Structured Finance at Ross, Sinclaire & Associates. The three hour program included an  overview of public finance and other non-traditional funding sources for real estate development and was attended by more than 30 developers, brokers and other commercial real estate professionals.

Topics included:

  • Newer tools available in this region including EB-5, PACE, Southwest Ohio Common Bond Fund, and the Port Authority’s revamped program offering a sales tax exemption on construction materials.
  • A review of the bedrock tools like Historic Tax Credits, New Markets Tax Credits, Tax Increment Financing, and Special Assessments.

Susan Thomas, Vice President of Public Finance at the Port Authority works with businesses, developers, non-profits, and municipalities to promote economic development in the City of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. She holds a B.A. with honors in Public Policy from Stanford University and an MBA from the Yale School of Management with a concentration in Finance.

Matt Staarmann, Managing Director at Ross, Sinclaire & Associates, LLC leads RSA’s structured finance group. He has extensive experience in structuring transactions with non-traditional sources of capital. Staarmann graduated from Xavier University with a degree in finance and economics and received an MBA from OSU.

The program was the second in a nine month long series of continuing education devoted to an inside look at how to apply complex tools required to achieve a market driven advantage in all realms of real estate development.
